Jeremy Renner Considers Retirement for His Daughter (news.com.au)

JEREMY Renner has played arrow-slinging superhero Clint Barton/Hawkeye in four Marvel movies, but he has never been closer to the character than he is now, in Captain America: Civil War.

The new blockbuster sees Hawkeye — who retired at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron to be with his wife and kids — spring back into action when the Avengers are split in two over government attempts to control them.

Tony Stark/Iron Man is pro keeping the superpowered in check; Steve Rogers/Captain America refuses to surrender his right to choose.

“I retire for five minutes,” says Hawkeye upon his grand re-entrance, “and it all goes to s---.”

Meanwhile, in real life, 45-year-old Oscar nominee Renner is openly uttering the R word, too. And like Hawkeye, it’s all about family — specifically Renner’s three-year-old daughter, Ava.

“There’s a lot of circles crossing on that character and what’s happening in my life,” says Renner, sitting on the balcony of a West Hollywood hotel.

Fittingly, practically his whole family is having lunch on the other side of the sliding doors. If he doesn’t have to be away from them, he won’t. And that’s exactly the point.

“If work kept me close, then yeah ... But I haven’t worked in California for 20 years,” Renner continues. “And that’s where my baby lives. It’s not going to serve me or her to continue working if it takes me to Botswana for nine months. Because I’m a single dad and split-time, it makes it a little more difficult.

“I’ve gotta do what’s best for the child and not what’s best for me or my career. I’ll sacrifice whatever I need to be the best father I can for my child. Timeline-wise, I don’t know what that means … but it crosses my mind daily.”

If and when Renner’s retirement does kick in, it won’t look much different from a Hawkeye retirement.

“It’s like, what’s retirement, really, for Clint?” Renner says with a chuckle. “He’d end up getting bored. When someone is in need, he’s gonna go. Me, I define it the same way: I’m gonna retire soon. But that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna work — I’ll do a movie once in a while, or build a house; I’m just not gonna do as much work as I’m doing.

“It’s the same sort of attitude: Go back when you’re needed. Clint, he’s always gonna do what’s right. He’s a server, a protector. So he’ll serve his family until a bad guy needs to be taken down.”

The way Renner talks about his upcoming projects — he’s a producer on the “fascinating” true drama The Founder, in which Michael Keaton plays the man who started McDonalds, and his production company has a Steve McQueen biopic “bubbling” — it’s clear his creative urges remain strong.

As an actor, he loved delving into Hawkeye’s backstory in Age Of Ultron — “I was always curious as to how they would explore it, because there’s a lot going on with that character; he was a huge grounding rod for that movie and that gang” — and has no complaints about popcorn movies not offering enough dramatic grist for his mill.

He didn’t join Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise or step into Matt Damon’s special ops shoes in The Bourne Legacy just for the money or a big-deal co-star.

“I got blessed with really interesting characters in those big franchise movies,” he says. “And by the way, it’s nice to do those ‘cos then you know people are gonna see it.

“I’ve done a lot of movies where you put all your heart and soul into something and it doesn’t get out there. It’s nice to entertain people, make ’em think, make ’em feel, make ’em laugh.”

Retirement or no: When a moviegoer is in need, Jeremy Renner will be there.
