MODESTO, CA - The father and former acting teacher of Jeremy Renner bubbled over with satisfaction Tuesday after the Modesto man was nominated for a best acting Academy Award.

Renner was nominated for his role as a bomb squad soldier in Iraq.

"He knew it would be physically demanding.  He thought the role was the opportunity of a lifetime for him," said father Lee Renner.

Jeremy, 39, began acting at Modesto Junior College where his father was stunned to see his son blossom on stage as the scarecrow in the "Wizard of Oz."

"I didn't recognize him.  He starts moving around the stage singing and dancing like Ray Bolger.  I said this is my kid?" said the elder Renner.

Jeremy was off to Hollywood after less than two years at Modesto Junior College.  After several small roles, including the portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer, Renner earned strong reviews in "The Hurt Locker."

His instructor at the Modesto school is proud and not surprised at his former student's success.

"I knew right away he had something.  He just had something very special in his intensity, his genuineness.  Really wonderful," said Michael Lynch.

Renner is competing against Hollywood powerhouses like George Clooney and Morgan Freeman.  "The Hurt Locker" is nominated for best movie as well.
