This is powerful!
Great from Jeremy to stand up for this!
Good job baby
Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes.
This is a beautiful effort. I hope I can be strong enough to not just leave it up to the government to change gun laws. I hope I can do little things to soften hearts, so we all fell more love and become an even more peace loving people. Thanks for the great example and uplifting comments.
I like the message, but I have a humble opinion about it: while no exists policies that go hand in hand with the message, and as long as the indifference towards others, loneliness, and all that thing still exists, I will not see changes. Everybody looks at his own navel. The sufferer, suffering in silence, alone. The sick person, get weapons easily. Society is sick? Or the person is sick? BOTH. That’s for a future political and sociological debate, concrete and correct.
Anyway, is good to see people you know they are famous, involved. Good for you Jeremy, good for all.
“Thank you Jeremy,” for taking the time to lend your voice to a good cause!
Hmmmm….. I have a good idea. How about we put a trained armed personnel at EVERY school. Like a police officer for example. The only thing that can stop a BAD guy with a gun is a GOOD guy WITH a gun. There is an old saying, “Don’t take a knife to a gun fight.” for a good reason! If we had an armed police officer at every school in this country, I can guarantee you that the gun violence will decline dramatically at schools. Do Not Ban Guns! They are NOT the problem. Another saying goes, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Remember, a gun is an inanimate object. If we ban guns, criminals won’t break the law. *sarcastic*
What do you think?
This is my opinion and I hope I don’t offend anyone. If I did offend you, I apologize. Good for you, Jeremy.
If my memory serves me correctly: The Clinton Administration passed legislation to require all persons who wanted to purchase a gun- get a background check. Ok-is that the only legislation we have on gun control? I think so…that being the case, its weak. I am sure there have been incidents where this has helped but there is a lot more that can and should be done without taking the 2nd Amendment away.
Concerning these shootings that happen in Newtown, Aurora, Columbine-etc. these individuals were considered non-criminals until the day they/he committed these acts. I believe the persons responsible in Newtown and Columbine obtained these weapons from their parents…hello! If you listen to the news and if what you hear is true, the mother stated to many people that her son had issues.- So you take your son to a shooting range to learn how to use a dangerous weapon?- This kid was at a shooting range, learning how to use this weapon but is still not of legal age to drink alcohol. I think this incident has more to do with family dysfunction at its best- than anything else.
I don’t think it would be a good idea to add a couple of security guards to the entrance of a school esp. when a person can still buy a semi-automatic that can kill many people in seconds. I don’t think that would be much of a deterrent! Maybe, the whole national guard might bring someone to think twice, that being of rational thought. Then you have to consider the money factor and what their budget could allow, and that not being very much esp. when they are laying off teachers and closing schools due to a lack of funds.
Then there is Hollywood-watch out here they come…its all your fault-lol When statements like this are made its obvious people do not want to take personal responsibility concerning their own actions. There is a thing called – RATING -at the beginning of a film. Its there for a reason. Also, people need to understand that a movie is a movie and not reality. I thought it was so weird when this Stewart/Pattinson break-up happened and all these people were so upset because they were thinking -Bella and Edward- wow! I agree that watching violence over and over again can bring you to become desensitized but not to the extend of acting out violence. There is definitely something else there for that to happen, like derangement!
I think its the little things that could bring about big change concerning gun laws. Yes, there is definitely other issues here besides gun control but at least its a start. I am sure some people will be upset but they are not the ones who have to go through the grief of losing their child, parent, husband, friend…!
Oh, one more thing- stop giving these people who kill a NAME!
Hey Erica, I didn’t say anything about putting the armed personnel at the front door. I mean, they don’t have to stand there like targets!
Sami- I know you didn’t, I was just going by comments I have heard since this happened. But since you brought it up-what part of the school should be guarded? All it takes is a blink of on eye for someone to get passed a guard no matter where they are…especially with the type of gun he used. I understand what you are saying- but I also think there are measures that could be taken, without taking away the 2nd Amendment that might be effective. No plan of action is going to be 100 percent but again if it saves one isn’t one enough???
Well, the guard can walk around inside the school patrolling the isles etc.
I believe if there had been an armed guard in the Newtown school there wouldn’t be 26 or 27 people dead, 20 of which are children!! Do you agree, Erica, that if there had been an armed guard at the Newtown school there wouldn’t have been so many lives lost???
Sami- that is anyone’s guess-we don’t know we can only speculate. With that being said, you would have to look at all the factors. The gun that kid was using could and did cause a lot of damage! The reason so many kids were killed is because of the gun he was using and how fast it could eliminate his targets. If a security guard was there and was able to get to where the shooter was and was able to control the situation-yes. But, I am guessing that would have not been the case. That particular gun should not be easy access-plain and simple!!! That type of gun is used for one thing-to do damage. I believe in the right to bear arms but, what kind of arms are we talking about? That is the question that needs to be addressed!!!
I wonder if Obama knew he could jump start the economy by bringing these issues up. Look at how many of these guns have been sold since this particular shooting happened. One thing is for sure-FEAR definitely gets the best of the American people. Don’t worry guns aren’t going anywhere there is too much money involved!
Erica – Let’s agree to disagree. Clearly we have two very different solutions that we believe in. I’m done…. Bye.
We can always put Machine Gun Preacher in our schools…=(
I hope I didn’t offend you. Its just an opinion, something we are both entitled too. Maybe it would work and maybe not-we will see what solutions these politicians have in store for the American people. I hope they understand the art of compromise!
Erica – You didn’t offend me and I hope I didn’t offend you in all of this. I am done talking about this topic.
It’s Christmas time!
Merry Christmas to everyone here and, of course, Jeremy!
I agree with the fact that we need a plan to end the violence, but I also feel that we need to include in the plan a much better system to educate people on weapon control. Unfortunately, I had to experience attending one of the Sandy Hook funerals last night. Robbie Parker from Utah is my husband’s foster brother. I can tell you that, though this horrific and senseless act is a nightmare for these young parents, they do not blame the gun for the death of their sweet angel. The man behind the gun was the killer. If he didn’t have a gun, he would have used something else. We need a plan to end violence. What if this man, who had mental problems, had a friend? Or someone to talk to… someone to mentor him. Someone, outside of his family, who cared? Would he have still done something so desperate? What if each of us, everyone of us, becomes a friend to someone who doesn’t have a friend? I can think of several people in my own community who has no one. I think it’s time for each of us to become someone to those who have no one. No, there is no way we can ever stop violence altogether, but isn’t there something we can do to minimize it? I just don’t think that leaving it up to the politicians to pass laws is enough. Yes, we need a plan, but the plan needs to include education and for each of us to have more compassion and empathy towards each other. What’s wrong with a law for “love thy neighbor”?
Tj1422- My heart goes out to you and your family. So very sorry about your loss.
Pause-
I understand your reasoning- but don’t you think that guns are very accessible and it would be harder to kill a lot of people in the matter of seconds with another weapon? Guns are easy, other weapons would take effort.
I also understand that people need to reach out to other people and maybe if they had some of these senseless acts would have not happened. Especially, the shooting at Columbine. Two kids that were sick of being bullied fought back, simple as that. Sad but at least you can understand why. I think this incident is a little more complex. The way in which he killed his own mother-suggest some deep seated emotional issues. Not just in the way he killed his mother but going out and killing innocent, defenseless children suggests something much more. I don’t think someone befriending him would have mattered. It is obvious that the mother tried to seek some kind of assistance or help by the way these individuals spoke about her…I don’t think it was taken seriously enough. Some major intervention was definitely needed but not given. I also don’t think people understand mental illness-its not something that goes away by being friendly or helping someone fit in…it took me awhile to understand that too. What people are not subjected too or have never been through- makes it hard to comprehend.
Politically, I am thankful that President Obama was re-elected. I believe he will make the best efforts possible in a situation like this. One other thing I should mention-former President Reagan shut down a majority of mental health facilities and incorporated these individuals in with the criminal population. I wonder if he re-thought that, seeing that he too was effected by a man with major mental issues. While we are talking about public officials and the need to make our society a more loving and peaceful atmosphere, I think we need to start thinking about who we put in office. Especially, when a Presidential candidate (Romney) states he could care less for 47 percent of the population because they didn’t or don’t pay income tax. For anyone to vote for a person that said such a thing shows what we as a society need a lot of re-evalution of how we view and value other human beings. There needs to be a lot less me-me-me and more we-we-we!!! I watched a documentary once called Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, hope it was ok to mention that. It is really good if you want to understand how complex our brain really is and how such issues like mental illness can arise.
Guns are tools, there have been mass killings for thousands of years,, and it is a lame excuse to say that they make it easier. You think it is so easy to kill with a gun get a .22 and aim at a rabbit and see how easy it is for you to pull the trigger. I bet you find it is not easy. When someone is out of their mind they don’t think about the difficulty in accomplishing whatever mad thought they want to accomplish. Mass murders have been happening through out history long before firearms. The main thing they have in common is people being killed can’t defend themselves because they do not have a weapon. I wish we all lived in a world where guns are not necessary but they are. Then you have Hollywood stars like Jeremy Renner that makes violent movies and then speaks out against violence and guns. Kind of hypocritical isn’t it?? If he wants to take a stand , stop making movies with guns!!!! Tell the rest of Hollywood to lead by example not keep turning out violent movies and saying we are not responsible. They are an influence on society like it or not. Tell them if they want to take a stand quit making violent movies and glorifying violence.
Tony- you have the right to your opinion but I think if you actually read Jeremy’s letter you would have thought twice about your comment. The only way Jeremy would be hypocritical is if he- himself went out and hurt someone. I have watched movies for years and never once thought about acting out something I saw on film when it pertained to violence. I understand people esp. Young people can be impressionable but that’s where the parent or guardian steps in. If you can handle fantasy land don’t watch it…pretty simple huh.
Can’ t handle-
Gerçek bir sanatçı olabilmek toplumu doğru yönlendirmek ve tüm insanları sevmekten geçer.Siz de böyle bir sanatçısısınız.Kalbinizde hep sevgiye yer olsun…………
yes me and my sister agreeae we shold put a stop to all gun violence around the world. no more people getting hurt. I wish Jeremy and every one a very happy Christmas.
I was raised in a gun holding household all my life. Granted, I’m 37 years old; I never thought of taking my father’s guns and shooting someone with them. At a young age I was taught to not touch a gun, and that the gun wasn’t a toy. I was taught and disciplined by both of my parents. If I ever have kids, I’d raise my kids the same way my parents raised me. I was taught the difference between reality and fantasy. I never reenacted a scene from a movie or tv show; because it was fantasy not real.
I believe in protecting my second amendment, and I’m not going to let Government tell me otherwise. I’m an American that believes in The Constitution of the United States of America and The Amendments. We have gun control laws on the records, but aren’t being enforced by Enforcement Agencies. I think that people want to blame the “gun” instead of the “person”. A gun doesn’t fire on it’s own, it takes someone to pull the trigger. The gun is that victim in every shooting, but we don’t blame the person that pulled the trigger.
People need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions, and not blame the gun for everything. I mean you really want the Government to take our Second Amendment away? What happens to the movies that Jeremy and all other actors has/had used a gun in them, and were all banned too? Think about it!! I like to protect the movie industry, because it’s not their fault; if you’re like me, a movie is entertainment or fantasy in my case.
For example, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has guns and violence, what would you do if Government banned the movie? I understand people want to speak up for a cause, but remember some cause can effect with a negative outcome.
I mean to offend anyone, but some people don’t want to see the big picture or see what can happen in the future, but I think of things like this everyday. I worry about my own nieces and nephews as they are starting school soon, and I love safer ways of preventing events like this happening, but not our Second Amendment.
I agree, Sarah B.!!
Well said!
Sorry I mean not to offend anyone, but some people don’t want to see the big picture or see what can happen in the future, but I think of things like this everyday. I worry about my own nieces and nephews as they are starting school soon, and I love safer ways of preventing events like this happening, but not our Second Amendment.
It’s really great that celebrities are taking a moment to speak out against gun violence. What would be even more amazing is if we could actually make that happen. This type of tragedy effects us all, regardless of whether we are directly connected to it or not. As the video says – enough.
I am not placing judgment, just curious in knowing why anyone would want to own a gun? Is it just for security purposes? Because your a avid hunter or just because you have the right to do so???
I don’t own a gun, but my family does. They have them to protect themselves, and their families. Some people hunt, some have them for security of an unjust Government. I live in a state that people will never give up their guns, and I live in Vermont the most Democratic State. We don’t have a lot of this stuff going on in our state. If a hunting accident happened, it’s rare here.
I’m not against people owning gun, but people need to be do background checks more than criminal records, but health records. Most of these shootings aren’t criminals, but people was mental issues.
The Second Amendment does state, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”. – cited from http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/second_amendment
I guess it’s based on the person for having a gun. We need the Gun Laws Enforced a lot more.
To be honest why is america the most gun ho place on the planet no wonder you have problems if you have big gun sales; guns guns everywhere. The fact they give a gun to anyone assuming it be used for “Good” honestly a gun isn’t used for “Good” its used to kill anything animals and humans. Sorry but they should consider getting rid of gun shops and other weapon outlets cause its too easy for anyone over there to go get a gun and go shoot innocent people. Protection can be in other forms a gun isn’t going to protect it will be used against the person even more so the person could shoot themselves out of suicide. Sorry but they just fuelling the growing fire that causing the destruction of humanity.
In the wake of all the tragedy, and especially at this time of the year, let us pray for peace, and an end to the violence. To Jolie and the staff at JLR.com, and to all the fans on this site with whom I enjoy sharing comments from day to day – Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays – however you say it and however you celebrate, I hope that each and every one of you enjoys a wonderful holiday with your family and friends. And last but not least to Jeremy – incase you happen to view the comments on this site – I wish the very same for you also, and I hope you know that your fans all over the world love you, and cannot wait to see what you have in store for us in the future. Best wishes to everyone for good health, happiness, and a great year in 2013.
Same to you, Di!
I want to make one last comment about this topic (and then I am done). I was looking at our local paper when I came across a headline stating -VIOLENCE PART OF OUR CULTURE- in this article it talks about movies, video games, etc. Well, I get to a new paragraph and it goes like this- “The Avengers,” this years top earner with a box office gross of $623 million, features an assassin with a bow and arrow and the destruction of New York City. LOL! Ok now its Clint Barton’s fault-a comic/movie character. That has to be the NRA distracting people away from guns and blaming movie characters that use other forms of weaponry. WOW!!!
Instead of just rating a movie I think it is time for them to also add this-THIS IS FICTION. I am really alarmed about how many people don’t know the difference.
I don’t follow celebrity stuff, Mr. Renner is no exception but a friend of mine posted something about boycotting this individual. So naturally out of curiosity I looked him up. I own guns. I am a disabled Veteran who served in OIF and I am a law abiding citizen. I hunt and as a mother I also want to be able to protect my daughter from the craizes out there.
Gun laws are made for those who uphold the law. A lot of the violent crimes and murders are done by those who DO NOT uphold the law and have obtained a gun by illegal means <<< That’s the issue! Stopping the ILLEGAL sale of guns and ILLEGAL gun rings and gun trade! And this is on an international level. Just like the drug cartels. It is a billion dollar industry and ILLEGAL but people find ways around this (I grew up border of the biggest drug cartels in the world. I have witnessed not only the drugs but the guns behind them). People need to understand that these problems stem from bigger issues. These proposed gun laws are a band-aid on a festering wound. Making these laws would just make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to obtain a fire arm and by that account would make an otherwise law abiding citizen obtain a gun by easier means by which I mean illegally. How do you suppose you control guns then? On that note, I for one am appalled by a lot of these celebrities who speak of gun violence yet glorify guns in their movies as entertainment. In any case we are pointing blame in the wrong direction. We are a society predicated on violence and as a society our moral stability has deteriorated where preserving life with love and acceptance just seems more and more like a dream. This issue is much bigger than just gun control and it is sad to see all these Hollywood types or anyone for that matter just take it for face value.
Hmmm…boycotting, so what your saying is- Jeremy Renner is not entitled to an opinion. Fact-the Columbine and Newtown killings happened by obtaining weaponry from their parents- not by a cartel. So you looked into every avenue of law making about guns and believe there is no law that might make our society a little safer…you might want to rethink that! Fact- not one statement made by these celebrities- (you mean people)-said anything about banning guns. Also, people need to get a grip on reality and fiction. Boycotting-wow, irrational!
@ Erica sorry but I never said anything about me personally boycotting and if you actually read my post you would see that. I stated I read something a friend of mine posted. I did surmise that it may be a little hypocritical to rise against something that is glorified in a career but I NEVER once stated that I agreed with this boycotting idea. Should we ban Hunger Games and Hawkeye for the murder sucide with a bow and arrow? I stated that we were pointing the finger in the wrong direction. I used the drug cartel as an analogy. I also never said that there wasn’t an issue and something shouldn’t be done. For gun control I actually pointed out where I felt the issues were and also felt that what these bans are posing was a mere bandaid to an ongoing issue and will have no effect on those who don’t uphold the law… . In fact, the gun control laws and bans are there, they just need to be enforced down to the root as far as controlling guns is concerned. Also check your facts, the parents never purchased the firearms for the two at Columbine they got those by other means and had an arsenal hidden in their own homes that their parents were unaware of and as far as the mother of the Newtown monster having a gun in a house with an individual who has been continuously marked as “not well” previous… is why I made the statement that the issue also runs deeper than gun control.
And I forgot… the statements for banning guns isn’t in this commercial but it is implied. You need to go to the Demand A Plan website:: A criminal background check (which is already the law and having a gun as a convicted felon is a federal offense), the banning of assault weapons with high capacity magazines (lots of assault weapons and such are already illegal in many states and banning them won’t stop people from owning them), make gun trafficking a federal crime, with real penalties for
Sorry just one more thing to say… Mr. Renner and any celebrity are entitled to their opinion. Absolutely… we all are… I guess I just find it difficult that society holds celebrities on this high pedestal that it takes things like this celebrity snippet for people to take action or care and it takes something like Newtown to happen to turn their celebrity into good.
Let me clarify- your friend doesn’t believe Jeremy is entitled to an opinion…also, I meant banning all guns, like taking away 2nd amendment rights to own one. The individuals who killed people in Newtown (and the others they mentioned) didn’t obtain guns from the cartel. I think the cartel would be more affiliated with gang violence…thats a whole other topic. Also, just because a celeb makes a commercial doesn’t mean I would jump on the bandwagon unless I agreed-I don’t care if they are a celebrity or the guy next door. I am glad I grew up with parents who taught me to think for myself- I just happen to agree with them. Does your friend not think Jeremy is a great actor and want to watch his films- I don’t understand why his personal opinion would have any bearing on whether or not someone watches his movies. Sorry, I don’t get it. That is like saying I would never watch a film by Clint Eastwood because he spoke at the Republican Convention. Don’t agree with his politics but I like some of his films.
Yes it is a separate issue… the cartel and gun violence and one in the same at other levels but I was just using it as an anaolgy… saying drugs are illegal and under certain statutes a federal crime but people do not uphold those laws just the same at it’s very basic do not uphold gun laws….. just a very basic law making, law abiding type analogy.
I don’t get it either like I said I didn’t agree but I commend you also not giving in to this celebrity hype as we both know so many people do. It’s unforunate that people just eat up whatever they say no matter what is said. I don’t agree with a lot of politics and definitely find more skepticism in anything when celebrities back it. People get more caught up in applauding celebrities when the true people fighting against or for a cause are those that make the difference. Here is to challenging our convictions at every turn and hoping that underneath disagreements we may find solace in the fact that we argue, we learn, we act upon, we yearn for knowledge, despite our beliefs to make a difference with a heart full of love and the best of intentions with humanity at the center.
Great conversing with you Erica. Happy New Year
=) u too
All he says at most is ‘…as an American’ cause he doesn’t have kids or a wife. I’m not putting an opinion on this but I’m just pointing it out. I still question why as serious this vid is, why there are so many comedians and just seeing them makes me think that this is a joke.
Hi Jeremy .My sister and I would like to wish u a very happy birthday for Monday 7th.Have A really nice day.
What happens if we are able to completely destroy every gun in the country? Sick people will find ways to fulfill their desires. What if someone took a can of gasoline with a road flare taped to the side of it into a classroom? Would we be talking about banning road flares and gas cans?
Guns don’t kill. Neither do knives, nor road flares. People kill.
